The House of Representatives has resolved to send a delegation to Katsina State over Tuesday’s rainstorm and flood to commiserate with the people of the state.
This followed a motion of urgent national importance by Hon. Salisu Salisco at Thursday’s plenary.
Moving the motion, Salisco expressed regrets that 58 people reportedly lost their lives, and 20 still missing after the incident.
He said that as a result of the storm, many houses were destroyed and more than 500 people had lost their homes and were using the primary schools as temporary shelter, while many were hospitalised.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.
The House, which observed a minute silence in honour of the dead victims, also called on the National Emergency Management Agency to urgently provide relief materials to the affected persons.
The lawmakers commended the urgent intervention of the Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Masari as well as the Federal Government’s delegation, led by Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for the on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected area.
