The House of Representatives has urged National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials for landslide victims in Tuomo, Delta, to ameliorate the sufferings the displaced indigenes.
This was sequel to a unanimous adoption of a motion by Hon. Julius Pondi at the plenary on Thursday.
The house also urged Niger Delta Development Commission to immediately recall the contractor, Vibrofloatation and Geotechnical Nigeria Limited, to site to complete the Shoreline Protection project in the community to avoid re-occurrence.
Earlier, Pondi had said that on March 18 and March 26, 2018, two massive landslides hit Tuomo community in Burutu Federal Constituency.
He said that the incident resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of naira and displacement of inhabitants of the area.
Pondi said that consequent to the landslide, members of the community were faced with lack of food, shelter and farm lands.
According to him, the people are exposed to communicable diseases and other devastating effects, including death, and it will worsen if the situation is not urgently addressed.
The lawmaker said that the non-completion and abandonment of the Shoreline Protection project led to the avoidable but dreadful landslides.
He called on the NDDC which awarded the contract to do the needful to hasten the completion of the project.
In his ruling, Speaker of the house, Yakubu Dogara, mandated the Committees on Niger Delta Development Commission and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to ensure compliance with the resolution.
