A dietician with the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Afiniki Igwe, has warned the public from eating of raw eggs.
Igwe said this on Thursday at the occasion of eggs donation to public secondary schools in Plateau State at the Government Science and Technical College, Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area.
According to her, raw eggs have bacteria that cause heart diseases called ‘Salmonella’ and the consumption of fresh raw eggs is a major cause of obesity in the urban city.
She said eggs are incredibly nutritious with high cholesterol.
Igwe encouraged Nigerians to eat cooked and fried eggs daily, stressing: “Eggs are essential for human consumption as it contains nutrients that help to lower the risk of heart related diseases.
“It also contains choline as an essential nutrient that is good for the effective functioning of the heart and brain.”
Igwe stressed that eggs contain antioxidants that have major benefit for eye health and also essential amino acids in the ratios required by the body.
The Managing Director of Grand Cereals Limited, Layi Oyatoki, has advocated that the Plateau State Government extends the school feeding to all public primary schools in the state to make learning and education more attractive to our future leaders as presently being done in some states of the federation.
As a subsidiary of UAC of Nigeria Plc, Oyatoki said the company has chosen education as a platform for delivering its corporate social responsibility by lending a helping hand for the education of our future leaders.
“We demonstrate our support for school feeding by donating eggs to some selected boarding schools in Plateau State where thousands of crates of eggs will be donated to these schools for the benefit of their students.
“We are doing this because we know that good nutrition is a vital ingredient for effective and productive learning among children.
“It has been scientifically proven that school children have longer attention spans and are more eager to learn when they have access to balance diet.”
Oyatoki implored the teachers to ensure that the donated eggs are judiciously used for the purpose for which they are meant.
