Marcus Rashford will be sidelined for three months after he picked up a double stress fracture in Manchester United’s FA Cup win over Wolves.
The forward came off the bench, but was quickly hauled back off in a move that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits “backfired”.
Rashford was always set to miss United’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, but it soon became apparent that the 22-year-old could be out for considerably longer.
Journalist Henry Winter has since reported that the Red Devils star will miss a large chunk of what remains of the current campaign.
He tweeted: “Rashford was carrying a single stress fracture in his back, now has a double stress fracture after Wolves game. Expected to be out for 2-3 months.
“Also has piece of floating bone in his ankle requiring non-intrusive surgery to remove. Been playing thru immense pain to help #mufc.”
Before United’s game with Liverpool at Anfield, Solskjaer was questioned about his star man’s absence and was clearly aware of the potential diagnosis.
He said: “He [Rashford] got a couple of knocks again and a couple of jolts when he came on against Wolves, and he’s aggravated his back.
“He’s had some trouble before and of course we are going to give him time to recover and rest before we put him back on the pitch. He’s always recovered quickly before so let’s hope he does that again.
“I wouldn’t expect him to be back in the next few weeks and we’ve got a mid-season break.”
It leaves Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as United’s only options in attack and may encourage them to act before the January transfer window closes.
