A High Court in Warri, Delta State has condemned one Ebikeme Igangan, a member of a vigilante group in the locality, to death by hanging.
Also condemned was a welder, one Ovwigho Udjor, who was found guilty of robbing a female shop manager in Warri of valuables and cash worth over N3 million.
Ebikeme, 26, from Ogbe-Ijaw, Warri South Local Government Area of the state, and Ovwigho, 36, who hails from Jesse town in Ethiope West Local Government of the state, were found guilty of three count charges of conspiracy, armed robbery and rape.
The charges were leveled against them by the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
They were slammed with the death judgment after they were adjudge to have, in the company of their gang, now at large, on or about December 9, four years ago, at Shell, Ogunu, within the Warri Judicial Division, robbed the manager of a popular shop (name withheld) inside the Shell Yard of various valuables, including two laptop computers, jewelries, five Nokia GSM handsets and one Motorola Blade handset, all valued at over N.5 million and cash of N2.8 million.
These items, the accused persons obtained from their victim at gun point, after she led them to her shop where the money was kept.
Dissatisfied with their loots, the robbers went ahead to rape a youth corps member, who happened to be a cousin of their victim but on a visit as at the time of the incidence.
The accused persons were arrested by officers of Shell Police with the assistance of youths in the area, who became suspicious of their movements on the night the operation.
They confessed, as admitted in evidence as exhibit during trial, to have gained entry into their victims shop, through the river to Shell Yard.
After admitting in their voluntary statements to the police to have committed the crime, the trial Judge sentenced them to death by hanging.
