The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has formally announced the result of the 39th edition of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the NSCIA Secretary-General, (Kuliyan Sokoto), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Thursday.
Speaking on behalf of the organisation’s President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Prof. Oloyede pointed out that the competition was held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State between 20th and 28th December, 2024 and featured six categories.
He disclosed that the exercise was organised by the accredited agent of the Council on all Musabaqah-related matters, including: Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, on behalf of the entire Ummah in Nigeria.
The results of the six categories of the competition (for both females and males), according to Prof. Oloyede, include: Ist category – memorisation of the entire Quran with Tafsir and Qira’at.
Winners include: Rumaisa’u Dahir Ibrahim Gombe, first, with 95.60; Bukhari Sunusi Idris, Kano State, with 98.20 points. Second position went to Fatima Abubakar Lawan, Kano, 94.60; Nuhu Muhammad, Gombe, 96.20. The third position was awarded to Zainab Yazid, Katsina, 92.50 and Mustapha Muhammad Nasir, from Kebbi, with 95.30 points

The second category involved memorisation of the whole Quran with Tafsir. Here, Khadijah Aliyu Ubam Nasarawa who polled 96.60 points emerged first and Bilal Hamza Abubakar Zamfara, 96.20 points. Second position went to Zeenat Olawumi Hamzat, Oyo with 95.80 and Ismail Dahiru Nuhu, Plateau State, with 96.01, while position went to Hafsa Yakubu Idris, Kano State, 94.50 and Nasiru Dahiru Atafowa, Bauchi, recording 96.00 points.
NSCIA statement revealed that the 3rd category involved memorisation of 69 Hizbs of the Quran and the champions were: first, Khadija Ibrahim Aliyu, Kaduna, scoring 99.50 and Abdussalam Rabiu, Katsina 98.80 points. Second position went to Fatima Musa Ahmad, Borno, 97.80 and Ahmad Zakariya Salisu, Yobe 98.00 points. For third position, there were: Hafsat Ahmad Abubakar, Plateau, with 97.70 and Musa Aminu, from Sokoto, with 97.20 points.
Fourth category featured memorisation of 30 Hizb of the Quran. The winners were: first, Aishatu Suleiman Isgogo, from Kebbi, polling 98.50 with Lawal Jafar, from Sokoto , who scored 97.41points. The second position went to Khadijah Musa Kaduna, scoring 98.40 and Jabir Dahiru Ibrahim Jigawa, with 97.40 points.
Third position was awarded to Jameelat Opeyemi Tijani Kwara, 98.20 and Muhmmad Babagana Aji Kolo, Borno, with 97.30 points
Similarly, the 5th category of the competition involved memorisation of 10 Hizbs of the Quran and Tangheem. The winners included: 1st Sumayyah Umar Sheik Niger, 96.50 Mahmud and Bashar , Jigawa 92.80 points. 2nd, Rukayya Aminu Yakubu, Jigawa 94.30 and Issa Abdul-lateef Kwara, 87.20 points. 3rd were Hauwa’u Muhammad Bala, Plateau 94.20 and Abdulmajeed Idris, Edo and 86.6 points.
The last (6th) category involved memorisation of two consecutive Hizbs of the Quran. Fatima Bello Abdullahi Cross River 98.30 and Mohammed Sani Hassan Ebonyi, with 96.30 points came first. The second position went to Zainab Muhammad Hussaini, Edo, 98.10 and Musa Jafar , Enugu, 95.50 points, while third position went to Fatima Abubakar Sadiq, Akwa Ibom, 97.20 and Abdulganiyy Abdulsabur Umar, from Edo, with 94.40 points.
In the meantime, NSCIA has affirmed the exclusive eligibility of the winners as the qualified candidates to represent Nigeria at international competitions in the respective categories.
Still, it clarified that the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is the only national coordinating body for the organisation of musabaqah (competition) in Nigeria.
The statement noted that while the right to dual citizenship of any participant in the musabaqah is incontestable, it is improper for any candidate who has participated as a Nigerian in this year’s competition to purport to represent any other nation at any of the international Qur’anic competitions for the same year on the excuse that such nation does not field a candidate(s).
“The Council shall not hesitate to initiate severe penalties against any person involved in any sharp practice that can misrepresent the Nigerian nation at any of the international Qur’anic competitions” Prof. Oloyede asserted.
He thanked all participants at the musabaqah and the donors of vehicles, pilgrimage and other highly valued prizes for the competition winners and prayed that Allah will reward them abundantly.
Prof. Oloyede added that the NSCIA expects that all the winners will continue to be worthy ambassadors of Islam and the Ummah in both learning and character.
The winners will be presented for 2025/1446 international competition.
