Prompt payment of salaries of players, coaches and other officials by clubs is key to improving the quality of the Nigerian football league, Abdu Maikaba, a league football clubside coach, says.
Maikaba, who is the Chief Coach of Plateau United FC, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja that this would greatly impact on the quality of performance.
He said: “When players and officials are promptly paid, the performance will improve and the league will become more competitive.
“Importantly, regular and prompt payment of players, coaches and officials is very important, as well as referees for unbiased officiating.”
The Assistant Coach at Nigeria’s Flying Eagles also expressed the need to improve on the training facilities as well as infrastructure for a standard league.
He urged the Nigeria Football Federation to therefore draw lessons from the English Premier League, which he described as an ideal league.
Makaiba said Nigeria needed to keep pace with current trend in sports in order to meet the standard of the English Premier League in the areas of infrastructure.
NAN reports that Plateau United, the former champions of Nigeria Professional Football League which Maikaba just joined, have just signed on eight players in preparation for the 2018/2019 NPFL.
The Jos-based club also terminated the contract of four players, as well as placing other four on probation.
It won the NPFL two seasons ago with coach Kennedy Boboye in charge, but could not sustain the performance last season as it finished without a trophy.
