The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria says Professional Qualifying Examination for teachers will take-off in the first quarter of 2017.
The Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday.
Ajiboye said: “We have developed the modules to reflect various categories of teachers: NCE first degree, Masters and PhD.
“Now we are in the process of developing the instruments and the Federal Government has provided the funds for development of the instruments.
“So, what we are doing now is to develop the test items.
“When we finish that I am very sure before the end of the first quarter of 2017, we would be able to deploy the qualifying examination because we would be ready with the questions.”
The registrar noted that there had been a significant increase in teacher registration because teachers had started to realise the importance of registering with the council.
Ajiboye said that any teacher who failed to register with the council before the end of the first quarter of next year would have to write the PQE before being registered.
He said: “TRCN is now more feasible.
“Teachers have now seen the strong need to register with the council because the benefits are monumental.
“And so many teachers are coming on board and registering in their droves to make sure they beat the idea of writing qualifying exams because anyone that does not register before the end of first quarter of next year, that person will write the examination before the person can be registered.”
Ajiboye said Ebonyi, Bauchi and Adamawa state governments had adopted the use of TRCN certificate as part of the promotion criteria for teachers.
The Professor said that it had resulted in an increase in the number of teachers from the states who register with the council.
Ajiboye commended the Nigerian Union of Teachers for its support in ensuring that TRCN achieved and delivered on its mandate.
NAN recalls that after the pilot PQE in 2008, the National Council on Education wrote to TRCN to suspend the examination pending when the necessary benchmark needed to continue was put in place.
Since its suspension, teachers had been registered at the point of graduation from various universities and institutions.
