An elder statesman, Prof Ben Nwabueze, has restated that only the Nigerian youths could achieve the real democracy the nation needed.
Nwabueze made the assertion in Port Harcourt when he chaired a Public Lecture to mark the 3rd anniversary of Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration in Rivers.
The lecture was entitled: “Democracy in Nigeria Still Many Rivers to Cross”.
He said that the country’s democracy would be achieved by the younger ones if they decided to participate in governance.
He said: “My generation is old and gone for politics and democracy, we cannot take Nigeria to achieve democracy.
“We need to leave it for our younger ones to help us to achieve democracy.”
Nwabueze, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a professor of Law, urged youths to take the mantle of leadership and achieve true democracy for the country.
He called on Nigerians to eschew nepotism, sectionalism and killings in the country.
He urged Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers to use his leadership to assist in saving democracy in Nigeria.
Nwabueze, however, commended Wike for his “giant’’ strides in developing the state.
Reacting, Wike promised to contribute to the achievement of true democracy in Nigeria, adding that his administration would protect democracy in the state and the country at large.
He said that the state government would support the launch of Nwabueze’s book on achieving true democracy.
