Private school owners in Nasarawa State have decried the excess taxes and levies imposed by the state government, and urged it to “critically look into the matter”.
The school owners, under the aegis of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Nasarawa State chapter, spoke through their Chairman, Boniface Iornumbe, in Karu on Sunday.
“We support the call from the state government asking us to contribute our quota to the development of the education sector, we even have more schools than the government. But, we are overtaxed,” he said.
Iornumbe spoke during NAPPS maiden Annual Thanksgiving Mass at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church, New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area.
He said NAPPS was contributing tremendously to the development of education and deserved support from the state government as partners in progress.
According to him, the running of schools is becoming too challenging in view of the economic realities.
He solicited the understanding of government in the area of taxes and levies both at the state and local government levels, saying the Thanksgiving Mass was to appreciate God’s kindness and hand over the administration of schools to Him, “given the plethora of challenges we face”.
Charles Umeke, a national official of NAPPS, in his remarks, said government alone could not handle the education of its citizens, hence the need to encourage private schools owners to contribute their quota towards providing quality education.
Rev. Ebenezer Olajimbiti, pioneer Chairman of NAPPS in the state, said government should not see private school owners as enemies, but partners in progress.
Olajimbiti said: “The contribution of NAPPS to the educational development of Nasarawa State has been enormous.
“We even have more schools than the government and what we are doing is more of social services than for profits.
“Government should not look at us like multinational profit companies and impose high levies and taxes on us.”
