The Presidential Panel on the reform of Special Anti Robbery Squad says it is investigating the movement of Comfort Hembe’s corpse to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, after it was initially deposited at the Gwarinpa Hospital.
The Chairman of the panel, Tony Ojukwu, made this known in Abuja this on Thursday while addressing newsmen shortly after conducting a public hearing to investigate the allegations of human rights violations against SARS.
The late Hembe was allegedly electrocuted by SARS operatives and her corpse, which was initially deposited at the hospital in Gwarinpa, was later traced to the hospital in Jabi, with no record of the movement.
Ojukwu said: “We tried to trace the issue of how the corpse of a deceased was missing from Gwarimpa Hospital and now was found at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi.
“We have been able to talk to the Chief Medical Director of Gwarimpa General Hospital.
“And we are now trying to unravel how there was no record about the deposit of this corpse at the Gwarimpa Hospital.
“And also this corpse was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre and the names of the people who transferred the corpse seem to be fake names.”
Ojukwu, who is also the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, therefore, called on all parties involved in the matter to cooperate with the panel to ensure that justice was done to both the complainants and the respondents.
News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the body of the deceased (Hembe) which became a subject of controversy over its whereabouts, was later found at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja.
NAN also recalls that one of the relative of the deceased had told the panel that the incident occurred on June 13, where seven men from SARS allegedly raided one Spy Annusa Guest House in Mabushi Village, Abuja.
The presidential panel on SARS reform was set up by the Federal Government to investigate the allegations of human rights abuses by the men of the squad.
It is expected to make useful recommendations to the government on the way forward.
