The National Association of Nigerian Students has lauded Ogun teachers over emergence as the first and sixth `Overall Best’ positions at the Presidential Teachers’ Award.
The National Public Relations Officer of the association, Bestman Okereafor, gave the commendation in Enugu on Tuesday.
According to Okereafor, NANS congratulates Ogun Government under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun and entire teachers in the state for the brilliant performance of Adaramola Femi of Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, who won the `Overall Best Award’.
He said that NANS also congratulates Fakorode Mosunmola, from Sagamu High School, who came sixth in the `Best School Administrators’ Award’ category.
“NANS considers the Presidential Teachers’ Award as a very good one aimed at motivating our teachers on the need to be more professional, steadfast, dedicated and committed to their chosen profession.
He said: “We are calling on state governments to emulate this positive initiative by prioritising the welfare of teachers and students.
“NANS is, however, calling on other teachers in the country to emulate the positive qualities of the winners aimed at impacting the very best to Nigerian students, who see teachers as role models.”
Okereafor said that the feat achieved by the teachers and the state showed steadfastness, perseverance and commitment to duty.
He, however, called on government at all levels to as a matter of urgency look into the decay in most government primary and secondary schools.
He said: “These decay ranges from non-conducive learning and teaching environment, over population in classes, lack of enough teachers, bad roads and bad bridges leading to some schools in some villages.
“Lack of health facilities, lack of functional and well-equipped libraries and laboratories, among several others.”
He said that NANS remained appreciative to the Presidency for its free school feeding programme, adding that the laudable programme should be emulated and complimented by state governments.
