The Plateau State Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Abubakar Dashe, has urged Nigerians to stop trading blames on the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission over the postponement of the general election.
Dashe said it would have been very disastrous if elections were allowed to hold as earlier scheduled, saying over millions of Nigerians would have been disenfranchised.
Dashe stated this on Wednesday at the one-day seminar organized for female journalists in Plateau State to sensitize them on 2015 election.
It had the theme: “2015 Election: women as panacea for stable democracy in Nigeria.”
Dashe said: “It is very obvious that the postponement has helped a lot of issues.
“It is clear that INEC was not prepared because with the extension to date, many are yet to secure their PVCs.
“So if elections were allowed to take place last month, many would have been disenfranchised.
“My governor has not gotten his PVC yet.
“Even me I just got mine yesterday.”
Dashe expressed delight over the decision of the female journalists as mothers to lend their voices to the quest for peaceful co-existence, particularly for the forthcoming elections.
Dashe, who emphasized the role of women in nation building, challenged the Nigeria Union of Journalists to sanitise the profession and ensure that the right people are allowed to practice and report objectively.
The commissioner also cautioned desperate politicians against the use of thugs to cause mayhem to innocent citizens during the campaign and voting exercise.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Plateau State chapter, Jennifer Yarima, cautioned politicians against the use of abusive languages to blackmail their opponents.
Yarima said as mothers, they cannot seat and watch negative trends that will on the long run turn them and their children to casualties.
