A Police Inspector, Monday Gabriel, has gone berserk, killing his colleague, Sergeant Felix Okago, with who he was on duty.
The incident, involving the Inspector Serving with Police Mobile Force 21 in Abuja, occurred in Lagos on Sunday, with others apart from the late Sergeant suffering injuries.
According to the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, the incident occurred at about 4:30am at a Federal Government facility in Ikoyi area of the state.
Elkana said a distress call was put across to Area A Command when Inspector Gabriel started shooting sporadically.
But after realising the damage he had done and in an attempt to escape, he took a patrol van and headed towards Third Mainland Bridge, shooting as he was escaping.
He was intercepted by Policemen from Bariga Division along Akoka, disarmed and handcuffed.
The rifle and vehicle were recovered from him.
The corpse of the deceased Sergeant has deposited in the mortuary for autopsy, while the Inspector has been taken to Police Hospital for medical examination as he presented signs of mental depression.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigation to take over the case.
Elkana said the Command deeply condoles with the family of the fallen colleague who paid the supreme price in service to his fatherland.
