The enforcement of the Lagos State traffic law restricting motorcycle riders in Lagos State has continued to have adverse effect as it was gathered on Tuesday that an unidentified commercial motorcycle rider was allegedly shot in the chest by policemen attached to the Ilupeju Police Station.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at about 10:15am at the Ilupeju Bye Pass in Ilupeju area of the Lagos State.
An eyewitness stated that the policemen were chasing the okada rider in attempt to seize his motorcycle but the bike man refused to stop.
Seeing that the okada rider was escaping arrest, one of the policemen chasing him allegedly opened fire and shot him in the chest.
The okada rider fell from his bike and the policemen, seeing that he was shot, were said to have hurriedly entered their van and sped off.
Fortunately, passers-by rushed to rescue the dying okada rider and took him to a nearby hospital.
It was gathered that the shooting caused pandemonium in the area as aggrieved motorcycles rider protested the shooting and resorted to burning used tyres on the road.
The protest caused vehicular delay.
It took a combined team of policemen from the Lagos State Police Command to disperse the protesting okada riders.
In a related development, commercial motorcycle riders plying the Magodo area of the state stormed the Ojodu-Berger Road attacking officers of the Lagos State Traffic and Management Authority, who were enforcing the restriction on motorcycle riding in the state.
It was gathered that a combined team of policemen and LASTMA officers have been carrying out massive clampdown on okada riders in the area.
