The Nigeria Police Force has underscored the need for its officers and men who have not joined the Police Health Management Organisation under the National Health Insurance Scheme to do so.
Dr Bolufunmilayo Obenbe, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of medical, Force headquarters, Abuja gave the advice on Thursday in Benin at the AIG lecture for officers and men of the Edo Police command.
Obenbe, who was represented by Dr Ahmad Yakasai, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Police HMO, this would enable the Police HMO to have large pool of resources and more robust to provide more medical services for the officers and men of the Force.
The AIG said that presently, the Police HMO was the largest in the country with more than 4,000 members’ enrollment, adding that since the inception of the HMO, the organisation had spent nothing less than N500 million in footing the medical bills of officers and men.
She also disclosed that in 2018 alone, more than N300 million was also spent for the health of men and officers of the Force and assured that the Police HMO would give its best to all who enrolled on it.
Obenbe promised that the HMO would abide by the National Health Insurance Scheme vision of availability, accessibility and affordability.
The AIG said that unlike some other HMOs under the NHIS, the Police HMO could sometimes go out of its way to assist officers and men with medical challenges, adding that such move “falls under the total exclusion category of the NHIS scheme”.
According to her, Police HMO wants to expand with the introduction of supplementary health insurance scheme, as well as educational and social schemes.
She also disclosed that plans had been concluded by the force headquarters to introduce the NHIS numbers of officers and men on the identity cards of personnel.
