Men of the Anti-Crime Patrol of the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday pounced on nine suspected cultists in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects had assembled at Jakaye Street, in the locality, for the initiation ceremony of new members before they were arrested.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Lucky Uyabeme, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, at the command’s headquarters in Asaba said the officers and men “swiftly moved to the scene on the receipt of the information” that the cult members had started to gather.
Those arrested included Samuel Chukwunonso, a student of Oko Polytechnic, in Anambra State, who lives at 1, Umuonaje Quarters, Asaba; Williams Ezewonu, a student of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku; Lucky Akomubuike, also a student of Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic; and Moses Osaroukhoe, a student of Auchi Polytechnic, who lives at 1A, 3rd Umueru-Lane, off Sakponba Road, Benin-City, Edo state.
Others were, Kenneth Iduh, a bus conductor of Hausa Quarters, Uromi Junction, Agbor, who was to be initiated; Azike Jideofor of Ogborji Quarters, Illah, in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State; Ajayi Timothy of 57, 2nd Circular Road, Benin-City; Timi Olorogun, a student of the College of Education, Rich-Lodge Hostel, Alihame, Agbor, who lives at Agudama Royal FM Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; and Gideon Emujevoke, a student of the University of Benin, Edo state.
Uyabeme listed the items recovered from them to include one cut-to-size single barrel gun, one battle axe, three strong decoders, one LG DVD, two scissors, one hammer, charm, assorted cloths and foot wears, one concoction native pot, one multiple electrical socket, one Lifan motorcycle with registration number QD 546 WER and another Qlink motorcycle with registration number QD 690 PTN.
Also paraded were five suspected kidnappers, who were allegedly celebrating their successes before the Command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad swooped on them.
They had abducted their victim in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, before his Toyota Corolla car, with registration number AHD 723 AA, was sighted one of the Petrol Stations in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Uyabeme said: “On receipt of the information, operatives of the squad mobilized and went out on trail of the suspects.
“Consequently, based on tip-off, the residence of the kidnappers at Ewreni in Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State was raided.
“The result is what you are seeing here now.”
He hinted of how one of the suspects, Chidi Amaka, 32, tried to disarm one of the police operatives of his rifle but in the process, “he was incapacitated on his knee and he was arrested” along with one Prince Reuben, 24; Prince Amadi, 17; Endurance Ogbuka, 24; and Unity Ayovwe, 17.
While he said Chidi later died on the way to the hospital, he listed the items recovered from them to include the kidnapped victim’s car, another Nissan Almera car, 12 handsets of different models, 29 AK 47 live ammunitions and 22 9mm pistol berretta ammunitions.
He said both the suspected cultists and the kidnappers would soon be charged to court.
