The Nigeria Police spent N176 million to acquire all appropriate documents relating to its 64.429 hectares of land in the Polome Community, Mowo Phase II, Badagry in Lagos State.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Prince Umar Manko, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday, explained that the land was meant for the Police Housing Scheme Project.
Manko said that the land was acquired legitimately during the tenure of Sir Mike Okiro, the Chairman, Police Service Commission, when he was the Inspector-General of Police, while the Certificate of Occupancy on it was issued in 2009.
NAN learnt that trouble started when developers went to the site some months back and discovered that a part of the land had been developed by some trespassers.
Manko added that both members of the host community and the illegal occupants were put on notice before the commencement of the recent demolition of the illegal structures on the land.
The Police chief confirmed that only 126 houses were demolished during the exercise, in contrast to some media reports, which had reported that over 600 houses were demolished in the operation.
