A combined team of the Police, social workers and other security agents has rescued a week-old baby girl from its lunatic mother in Okitipupa, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that it took the combined team over five hours before they could rescue the baby from its lunatic mother whose name or relatives were unknown.
Bukola Odusola, the head of the social workers told NAN on Tuesday that the baby was immediately taken to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa for series of medical tests to know her state of health.
She said that medical report stated that the baby was in good health, state of mind and also HIV negative.
Odusola said: “It took the team over five hours before we can rescue the week-old baby from her lunatic mother and immediately, we took the baby to the hospital for medical tests.
“The baby was placed on medical examinations and report shows that the baby is in good health, state of mind and HIV negative.”
Meanwhile, Morenike Alaka, Okitipupa Council Caretaker Chairperson, who visited the baby in the hospital, commended the team for the rescue mission, saying “every child has the right to live”.
She warned men of the underworld to stop the habit of impregnating lunatics, adding that such actions put more pressures on the government.
The council boss, while presenting gifts to the baby, said that the State Ministry of Women Affairs had been contacted to continue to follow up on the health of the baby and to take the mother to the state psychiatric home.
Alaka said: “People who go about to impregnate lunatics should desist from the acts because they put more pressure on government and henceforth security agents have been put on alert to arrest them.
“The State Ministry of Women Affairs has been contacted to take charge of the baby, while the mother will be taken to psychiatric home for proper attention.”
Bernice Akinnagbe, the Iyaloja General of the council area commended the rescue team for a job well done and the council boss for her swift action, noting that the rescue was first of its kind in the area.
She said that anybody caught with the acts of sleeping with women who have mental challenges should not be spared but made to face the wrath of the law.
NAN reports that the council boss was accompanied on her visit to see the baby at the hospital by stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress, led by the party Chairman in the council, Wole Akeremale.
Others on her entourage are the supervisors, royal fathers, market women, medical experts and security agents.
