Police repel attack in Katsina, kill five, recover 12 AK 47 rifles

The Nigeria Police said their command in Katsina State foiled an armed gang attack in the state in the early hours of Friday and recovered 12 AK 47 rifles and 15 AK magazines.
A statement issued by CSP Frank Mba, on Friday, also said that 15 Improvised Explosive Devices and two vehicles were recovered from the hoodlums.
The statement noted that the hoodlums besieged the ancient town of Daura for coordinated attacks on police facilities and banks.
“After a long gun battle with the hoodlums, the criminals were overpowered by the police,” the statement stated, adding that five members of the gang were killed while others escaped with bullet wounds.
The statement added: “The exceptional display of courage and gallantry by the policemen resulted in the death of five of the heavily armed gang and the inflicting of severe injuries on dozens others who managed to escape with bullet wounds, abandoning their weapons in the process.
“Weapons and other items recovered by the police from the gang included 12 AK-47 rifles, 15 AK 47 magazines, 15 Improvised Explosive Devices, as well as two vehicles, a Golf and a Toyota saloon car, used by the hoodlums as operational vehicles.”
The statement added that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had commended the efforts of the Police Command in Katsina State for repelling and foiling the attack.
It enjoined officers not to relent in their efforts at combating all forms of crime and criminality until the battle against terrorism is won.
“Investigation into the incident has since commenced,” it added.
