The police in Anambra State have begun investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of two students of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam.
The spokesman of the state police command, Uche Ezeh, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Thursday that the students, a male and a female, were discovered by a concerned student who broke into the boy’s hostel room after he failed to pick his calls.
Ezeh said the police were invited to the scene and that they took the students to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka where the lady was confirmed dead.
He said the male student also died two days later, adding that their corpses had been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.
A senior staff member of the institution, who pleaded anonymity, said the deceased male was a 300-level student of public administration, while the female was a 200-level student of petroleum studies.
An eyewitness said the students probably died from inhaling carbon monoxide from a nearby generator.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, said he would speak on the issue at the conclusion of police investigations.
