President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the development of the potentials of the country’s sports men and women.
Jonathan spoke through Vice President Namadi Sambo on Saturday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State during the closing ceremony of the 10th Biennial Nigeria Police Games.
He noted that the Presidency’s hosting of a retreat on sports in November 2012 was in realization of this objective.
“The Federal Government will continue to give maximum support to our sports men and women to ensure that they can achieve their ultimate goals and bring honour to our dear nation,” he stressed.
Sambo, acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Police to the development of sports in the country, saying: “The Force is one of the veritable sources that has produced great athletes, that have brought honour and glory to our dear Nation.”
The vice president noted the immense contributions of the Nigeria Police sports men and women, particularly the likes of CSP Chioma Ajunwa, late SP Sunday Bada, ASP David Izonrite and DSP Samuel Peters, and numerous others to the sporting success of Nigeria at international events.
He congratulated the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, and his management team for the success of the games.
The host Governor, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, who spoke through his Deputy, Tele Ikuru, said the games had ignited the spirit of unity and sportsmanship among all the participants, including those from other sister security agencies.
At the end of the games, Zone 2, with headquarters in Lagos State, won the overall trophy of the event while Force Headquarters, Abuja and Zone 11, Osogbo came second and third respectively.
