The Imo State Police Command on Thursday said it arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl in Nkwerre Local Government Area.
The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Katsina, who presented the suspect at the scene of the crime at Amaegbu, Umololo, Nkwerre, said the offence was committed in October.
Katsina said the victim was declared missing in October and later discovered dead with her neck strangled in an abandoned well.
He said the suspect was apprehended by the command’s Ambush Squad, which had launched a search for him after the incident.
The commissioner said the suspect lured his victim into his house where he raped and strangled her.
He said the suspect dumped the remains of his victim in a disused well before he escaped and sought refuge in Umugba village in Abia State.
Katsina said the corpse had been identified and taken for autopsy.
According to him, investigations revealed that the suspect has been banished from his community for similar offence.
He said that after the completion of investigation, the suspect would be arraigned in court.
