The police have arrested a 49-year-old man for allegedly raping a
12-year-old girl in Ashaka town of Gombe State.
DSP Fwaje Atajiri, the Police Public Relations Officer, Gombe State
Police Command, made the information known at a news conference in
Gombe on Friday.
Atajiri said two other suspects were arrested for allegedly selling
drugs to thugs, popularly known as “Yan Kalare”.
The police spokesman alleged that the rape suspect lured the girl, who was hawking groundnuts, to his apartment and had carnal knowledge of her.
“He had committed the same offence in the past and was charged to
court but we don’t know why and how he was released,” Atajiri said.
He advised parents to take good care of their children and not make
them vulnerable to evil persons.
The suspect later told newsmen that it was the devil that led him to
commit the act.
On the two suspects arrested for dealing in drugs, Atajiri said their
arrest followed a confession by some of the thugs, who were arrested
by the police.
He said the command had mapped out strategies to flush out criminals
in the state and appealed to the people to provide information about
criminals.
Atajiri said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
