The Polish quartet of Karol Zalewski, Rafal Omelko, Lukasz Krawczuk and Jakub Krzewina broke the world indoor record in the men’s 4×400 metres on Sunday at Birmingham in the UK.
The Poles broke the record for a stunning finish to the final track event of the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
The U.S. led the race for the first three legs with Fred Kerley, Michael Cherry and Aldrich Bailey covering the first 1,200 metres in 2:16.33, putting them on course for a world record.
But the team’s anchor leg runner Vernon Norwood was unable to shake off the challenge from Poland’s Krzewina over the final two laps.
As the pair entered the home straight, Krzewina kicked past Norwood to cross the finish line in 3:01.77.
The Americans’ runner-up time of 3:01.97 was also inside the previous world record of 3:02.13, set by a different U.S. quartet at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Sopot 2014.
