Pogba’s brother accuses Man United of ‘false promises’

Paul Pogba’s brother Mathias has revealed that he was behind the midfielder’s return to Manchester United, and has claimed the club made “false promises” to convince Pogba to sign.

The France international is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Both Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are amongst several sides that have been linked with the 29-year-old, with a move to the La Liga also on the cards due to interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Pogba has been heavily criticised from all angles since returning to United in 2016, but Mathias has revealed that the club may have to shoulder some of the responsibility for the transfer for not fulfilling their promises.

Speaking about the £89 million transfer, he told So Foot: “Not only did I push him a little: it’s thanks to me that he signed there!

“I convinced him, 100%. And look at the player he has become. In Manchester, they were making him false promises.”

Mathias didn’t expand on his “false promises” claim, though there is a feeling that the former Wrexham star doesn’t feel United have lied to his brother.

Asked about how influential he still is with Paul, Mathias continued: “The role of a big brother, quite simply: no more, no less. I will advise until my death.”

Although Pogba has made just 16 appearances for United so far this season, the club will certainly need to replace the former Juve star in the summer.

The Athletic revealed that the Red Devils will be in the market for both an attacking-minded and defensive-minded midfielder at the end of the season, as well as a striker and a right-winger.

West Ham vice-captain and England international Declan Rice has been heavily linked with making a move to Old Trafford recently, though it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils are willing to spend over £100 million for his services.
