The Nigeria Professional Football League leaders, Plateau United Football Club of Jos, on Wednesday at the Rwang Pam Stadium beat visiting Nasarawa United FC of Lafia 1-0.
The league leaders took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through a penalty kick converted by Peter Eneji.
Eneji was adjudged by the centre referee to have been fouled from behind in the penalty area by a Nasarawa United player.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the game could be best described as even as there were no clear goal scoring chances from both sides for most periods.
Speaking later, Kabiru Dogo, Nasarawa United’s Head Coach, told newsmen that poor officiating was responsible for their loss.
Dogo said his side put up a good fight and could have earned at least a point from the game if not for the poor officiating.
He said: “Plateau United will no doubt be playing continental football next season, but they should not expect referees to be playing for them as it will be a different ball game at that level.”
Maurice Longnyap, Assistant Coach of Plateau United. who spoke on behalf of Kennedy Boboye, the team’s Chief Coach, said their victory was well deserved.
Longnyap said their matches against Nasarawa United were always tough “considering the fact that they are a good side and it is always like a local derby between us”.
He however said the penalty kick they utilised to score was a genuine one, expressing disbelief in the fact that Dogo was making an issue out it.
