The Chairman of the Plateau state Teachers Service Commission, Chief Vongjen T. Lar, has expressed shock over the number of applications that flows to his table seeking to be employed as teachers in the state.
The chairman said during one of the visits to some local governments, the number of applicants who turned out even outnumbered political rallies.
Lar described the situation as very chaotic in view of the fact that government intended to employee about 1,000 teachers only, but has so far received well over 11,000 applications.
The chairman, who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in his office, said the commission will handle the situation in such a way that nobody will feel injured at the end of the exercise.
He said: “The commission is determined to address the negative vices where some secondary schools exist without teachers and with approval for the recruitment of 800 teachers in the state by Governor Simon Lalong, we are going to be transparent in handling the exercise.
“Those who are thinks that teaching line is a place to manage life are making great error because education needs to be given great priority.
“The exercise would be very competitive to an extent that those with BSc in other fields but do not have PGD in education will not fit into the system and those with NCE would be accorded top priority.”
Lar said after the exercise, those selected must pass the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria examination before they will be considered.
He expressed confidence that the recruitment will not turn out to be a political exercise.
He said the government has demonstrated goodwill in the case of the state civil servants and pensioners and as such will adequately take the welfare of those to be recruited seriously.
He appealed to those who might miss out of the exercise to remain patient and wait for another opportunity.
