Sunday marks three years since Reeva Steenkamp was murdered by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, and interest in that fateful night remains so intense a documentary on the crime and subsequent trial is in the works.
Shooting will begin next month and the film is expected to be released early next year.
ScreenDaily reports the documentary: “Oscar Pistorius: Killing A Dream,” will be produced by Western Edge Pictures and directed by its founder, Vaughan Sivell.
Sivell told the publication the Pistorius trial shows how the Paralympic star “self destructs in a way the country of South Africa destructs”.
Journalist Gareth A Davies, the boxing correspondent of the UK’s Telegraph newspaper, who also writes about Paralympic sport, will collaborate with Sivell.
Pistorius shot Steenkamp through a toilet door at his home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
One year later, on the first anniversary of her death, he said: “No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved – and continues to love Reeva.”
His trial was televised live, attracting massive media attention and scores of international journalists.
He was found guilty of culpable homicide in early September 2014 in the High Court in Pretoria.
In mid-October 2014 the former Paralympic-sprinter received a five-year prison sentence as well as a three-year suspended sentence on a charge of reckless endangerment related to an incident with a firearm at a restaurant.
He was released under house arrest in mid-October last year, after serving a year in prison.
Events took a turn in December last year, when the Supreme Court of Appeal found the High Court had erred and Pistorius was guilty of murder.
Lawyers for Pistorius said they would appeal the new conviction and the Bladerunner remains under under house arrest until the matter is finalised.
