The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company says it is owed N121 billion by its customers in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers.
John Onyi, PHED’s Manager, Corporate Communication, said in a statement in Port Harcourt on Monday that the huge debt had affected the company’s operations.
Onyi said the company had however engaged the services of an accredited agent to assist in recovery of the debt in three of the four states.
He said the decision to appoint a debt recovery agent was taken to tackle its dwindling finances and meet its statutory obligations.
He said: “The agent is saddled with the responsibility of recovering the outstanding debt from our residential customers that have not made payments to the company in the last six months.
“The agent will recover the funds from our indebted customers in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers states.
“The agent will organise its team as it deems appropriate to enforce payment of electricity bills.
“The agent shall direct customers to the different PHED payment channels, such as PHED offices, banks and accredited G-pay outlets for payment of their outstanding bills.”
The manager of corporate communication urged the affected customers to visit any nearby PHED office to reconcile their outstanding debts before the arrival of the agent.
The spokesman called on members of the public and the company’s workers to corporate with the debt recovery agent to enable the team to achieve its set target.
