The Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday demanded for investigation by President Muhammadu Buhari into killings of the party’s Woman Leader, Rebecca Achu, and other members of the party by hoodlums in Kogi State.
Achu was burnt to death after the purported victory of Governor Yahaya Bello in last Saturday’s governorship election.
The hoodlums, accused of being affiliated with the All Progressives Congress, burnt her to death in her home.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the lawmakers were shocked that what the Independent National Electoral Commission announced was not what happened on the field during the voting process.
Abaribe said: “We totally reject the pronouncement, the outright intimidation and the killings all in the name of winning elections, and also the connivance of security agencies with APC to perpetrate hate on Nigerians. What was announced is not what happened in the field.
“We are further pained by the fact that the PDP Woman Leader, Rebecca Achu, was, after the purported winning of Governor Bello, APC hoodlums chased her, poured petrol on her and burnt her to death, for a mere fact that she is an opposition leader and a woman at that.
“Our problem is that if you are in opposition and singled out and murdered, then it means that the days ahead will be more dangerous.
“It means that we members of the opposition are not safe.”
Abaribe called on President Buhari to direct security agencies to fish out the hoodlums that caused mayhem in Kogi State, Adding that the wanton killings during the election indicated that 2023 would be deadly.
He said: “We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police to fish out the hoodlums because what it tells us is that we in the opposition are no longer safe.”
