Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State says his administration will conduct local government election in July.
Ajimobi made this known on Monday in Ibadan at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Transition Committee Chairmen for the 33 local councils in the state.
Ajimobi said the newly appointed transition committee chairmen have only four months to stay in office before the council election would be conducted.
He said: “Let me tell you all that this is an opportunity for you to showcase your potentials.
“You are spending just four months in this office.
“I swear to God, there won’t be extension.
“We will unfailingly have the election.
“Toward the end of your four months tenure in this office, the party would hold primaries across the state to elect the party’s candidates.
“I won’t interfere in the selection of any candidate.”
The governor told the chairmen that his administration would not tolerate corruption, urging them to be guided by their oath of allegiance and fear of God.
Ajimobi said: “There is none of you that the people did not complain about.
“You have to be more focused toward the development of your council areas.
“It is by this that some of you may be picked and returned as an elected chairman.”
Ajimobi urged the council chiefs to eschew self-centredness but focus more on embarking on people-oriented projects.
Ajimobi described local government as an important tier of government that must be enhanced.
He said it was an essential player in the collective efforts of changing society.
He said: “The purpose of governance is to make life easy for the people through provision of infrastructure and other social amenities.
“This is a time to bear and endure and not the time for ease and comfort.
“Majority of us run after all that we do not need.”
The governor said his administration would run government as an effective organisation whose product was quality service.
He also said there must be critical engagement of unemployed youths, urging the councils to develop integrated agriculture in collaboration with the state government.
Ajimobi urged the newly appointed chairmen to make good use of the agrarian potentials of the state, saying government would support them to succeed.
He also implored the people to give the new appointees the support they need in moving the councils forward, urging them not to see them as philanthropists.
Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Chairman of Ibadan North-West Local Government Council, said he would intensify efforts on security, urban renewal, empowerment and infrastructure.
Azeez Oladejo, the Chairman of Ibarapa Central Local Government Council, said he would concentrate on people-oriented projects based on need.
Oladejo also told the News Agency of Nigeria that he would promote unity in the area.
Yinka Akinbode, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government Council, said he would revive the farm settlement at Erunmu, noting that this would create jobs for unemployed youths.
Akinbode told NAN that he would also focus more on security and community development through the provision of amenities.
