The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to critically investigate the Divisional Police Officer and other officers of the Esigie Police Station, Benin City, Edo State.
The resolution followed the adoption of the report of the committee on Public Petition on the murder of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, the Principal Personal Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State.
Oyerinde was murdered in front of his house in Benin on August 31, 2012.
According to the Chairman of the committee, Hon. Uzo Azubuike (PDP-Abia), complications were introduced by the police when a firearm allegedly recovered from one of the suspects was registered against a man named by the Department of State Security in the murder.
Azubuike said that the suspect was reported to have been in police custody before Oyerinde’s murder.
It urged the Inspector General of Police to harmonise all perceived areas of conflict in the investigations by the police and the DSS based on quality of evidence.
The committee also urged the IG to transmit the case file to the Attorney General of Edo State for immediate prosecution of all the suspects.
The House urged the Police to further investigate the involvement of one Rev. David Ugolor beyond the confession of a suspect, subject to a diligent pursuit of his suit against his arrest and detention.
The House urged all the security agencies to cooperate and collaborate, while ensuring respect for the statutory responsibilities of the respective agencies.
It urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that in the future, governors, as Chief Security Officers of their states, are given regular briefing in matters of serious crimes and eventual breakthroughs.
The committee commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police and the DSS in the investigation of this matter and urged, in the future, for better cooperation among security agencies.
The police and the DSS had presented conflicting reports on the murder, prompting the state governor to allege deliberate cover-up by the Police.
