The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially declared the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, as the winner of the 2014 governorship election in Osun State.
The Returning Officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife, Osun State, Prof. Bamitale Idowu Omole, made the declaration at the INEC office on Abere Road, Osogbo.
Omole said: “I hereby declare that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, having satisfied the provision of the Electoral Act, is hereby declared the winner of the Osun State governorship election.”
Aregbesola scored 394,684 votes and won in 22 local government areas out of the 30 local government areas in the state.
His closest rival was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who had 292,747 votes and won in eight local governments.
Aregbesola won in Ayedade, Ifelodun, Ede North, Ola Oluwa, Irepodun, Ila Orangun, Ede South, Atakumosa West, Oriade, Orolu, Boripe, Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Ifedayo, Irewole, Obokun, Egbedore, Iwo, Osogbo, Olorunda, Atakumosa East and Ejigbo local government areas, while Omisore emerged victorious in Isokan, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ayedire and Ife South local government areas.
Other candidates in the election had far fewer votes.
Alhaji Fatai Akinbade of the Labour Party polled 8,898 votes; Senator Sunday Fajimi of the Alliance for Democracy scored 1,982; and the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Elder Sunday Akinwusi, 534 votes.
