The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria has advocated for the integration of primary eye care into the primary health care system in the country.
It was advocated through its National Strategic Eye Health Plan designed to collaborate with stakeholders in the health sector to reflect shared aspiration to strengthen the national health system.
It was also proposed to improve the health status of Nigerians.
In a jointly signed communiqué by the OSN Communiqué Drafting Committee Chairman, Dr. Jeff Adewole, and Secretary, Dr. Ernest Ogbedo, the body promised to align a working strategy with both national and international bodies in order to prevent avoidable blindness and to meet the challenges of achieving improved eye health status in the country.
The communiqué further commended the Delta State Government for its unrelenting support at improving health care service delivery in the state, adding that the role played by the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, was most appreciative.
Meanwhile, the Society has elected new executives to pilot its affairs for the next one year.
The new executives were sworn in at a dinner party organized by the body to mark the end of its 38th National Annual General Meeting and scientific conference held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Installing the new executives of the OSN, the outgoing President of the body, Dr. Regina Morgan, enjoined them to be hard working and use knowledge and resources gained for the good of the society and the development of eye care in Nigeria.
Morgan ascribed the success of her tenure to the love and support from members and sued for the same disposition towards the new executives.
The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the OSN 38th National Annual General Meeting and scientific conference, Dr. Faith Ejegi, admonished the new exco to shun acts capable of bringing disunity to the body.
Ejegi enjoined them to work collectively to take eye care service in the country to international standard.
In his response, the new President of the OSN, Prof. Sabastine Nwosu, promised to do his best and carry all along in attaining quality and accessible health care service delivery to Nigerians.
Nwosu solicited support from OSN members and other stakeholders to be able to attain the desired status for the country.
The occasion featured cultural performance by the Delta State Arts and Culture Troupe and dance from an Indian guest.
Plagues were presented to international guests.
