Gunmen on Saturday shot dead Baba Seriki-Sanu, a staff of the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, who was on his way to Ilorin on official duty.
A source told the News Agency of Nigeria that Seriki-Sanu, the Treasurer of the Kaiama Emirate Council, was in a bus with other colleagues when the gunmen struck.
The source stated that the incident happened between Kaiama town and Gwaria, another village in the local government.
NAN learnt that the deceased died on the spot while other staff who sustained injuries were taken to the hospital.
NAN learnt that the staff were on their way to Ilorin to attend a screening by the state Local Government Service Commission.
Christopher Okun, the Divisonal Police Officer, Kaiama, confirmed the incident, saying that no arrest had been made.
The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Alhassan Bagudu, who also confirmed the development, described it as “shocking and pathetic”.
In the meantime, Bagudu had in an interview with NAN pleaded with authorities to as a matter of urgency rehabilitate the Kaiama-Kishi Road.
The chairman stated that the plea became pertinent in view of the danger the deplorable state of road was posing to passengers plying the road.
He said that gunmen were using the opportunity of the road to rob their people.
NAN learnt that the deceased had been buried according to Islamic rites.
When contacted, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, however, said he was yet to be briefed about the incident.
