Deadly struggle over the ownership of a piece of land between Umuseti and Umusedi in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State has claimed a life and properties worth millions of naira.
The rising tension in the locality compelled members of the state’s House of Assembly to adopt a motion calling on relevant authorities to beef up security in the troubled communities.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Lucky Uyabeme, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, however, said there was an ulterior motive to the tussle for land.
According to Uyabeme, the perpetrators of the dastardly act were members of anti-cult groups in the area.
Trouble, he confirmed, started when both communities, fully armed to the teeth, engaged themselves in a battle.
He said: “The mystery we are trying to unravel is why it has to be that the victims were both members of the anti-cult organization.
“There is certainly more to it than meet the eye and we are investigating the matter.”
He said hundreds of policemen had been deployed to douse the rising tension in the locality.
He assured residents of the two communities of adequate protection, urging them to go about their lawful duties without fear.
The member representing the area in the House, Hon. Azuka Azuka, who had raised the issue under Matters of Urgent Public Importance, condemned the crisis and called for urgent intervention before the situation became uncontrollable.
The identity of the dead could not be confirmed as at press time.
The injured have been taken to the hospital.
