The former Chairman of Senate Appropriation Committee, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has expressed shock and disbelief at the sudden death of John-Abba Ogbodo who, until his transition, was the Political Editor, Northern Operations of the newspaper.
In a condolence letter sent to the publisher and management of the Guardian newspapers, Omisore, who advocated immediate commencement of life insurance for journalists, recollected his regular interactions with the late journalist while in the Senate between 2003 to 2011, noting that “John is a thoroughbred professional.
“The Guardian family in particular and the Nigerian media in general has just lost one of its finest politics reporters. The late Ogbodo was one journalist whose professionalism was without blemish and whose style of reporting was exceptional. I developed a great deal of respect for him in my official interactions with him as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He would sorely be missed by all who knew him for the warm and affection he radiated.”
While praying God to grant The Guardian and his family the fortitude to bear the loss, Omisore called on the employers of journalists to fast track the planned insurance programme for journalists.
He said: “Such insurance cover is long overdue.
“Journalists are critical sector of the society. We owe them a lot in the conduct of their assignments. I know the Nigerian Union of Journalists is working on the issue of insurance and I urge them to move further on it.”
