Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has donated a plot of land each to four members of the Golden Eaglets team, which recently won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Okorocha made the donation on Wednesday evening during a dinner party organised in honour of the players at the Government House in Owerri.
Kelechi Ihenacho, Chigozie Ezeh, Chidiebere Nwakali and Odinaka Uzoho were the beneficiaries of the governor’s gesture.
The governor also promised to give each of the players N1 million, apart from awarding scholarship to them to pursue their education to the university level.
He further donated a plot of land and N2 million to Emmanuel Amunike, an assistant coach with the team, for his “wonderful contributions to the Eaglets campaign at the football competition”.
The players, who are indigenes of the state, had alongside 15 others on Friday at Abu Dubai in the UAE won the competition to make it Nigeria’s fourth title win.
The governor described the players as worthy sons of Imo State and urged other young people to emulate their accomplishments.
He said the contribution of the players in winning the competition “has proven that Imo has more than enough young and undiluted talents”.
“The FIFA U-17 World Cup victory has brought back the lost glories and has restored the faith that Nigeria is still the giant of Africa,” Okorocha said.
In his reaction, Amunike thanked the governor for appreciating their contributions at the competition.
He said the victory typified hardwork and dedication to duty, and commended the players for sticking to instructions in all their games.
The former Super Eagles forward said every talented player in the country would be given the opportunity to be selected for the next competition.
He promised to always assist any talented player from Imo State to excel in his career.
