Tension was high at Ita Alapo Street, Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State on Thursday as sympathizers beat a revenue collector in front of Great Foundation School after he pushed a pregnant woman and her husband violently off a motorbike because of a rider’s permit.
The woman, who was said to be about seven months pregnant, and her husband, identified simply as Mr. Sunday, a plumber, were on their way to the clinic for medical check up when they met the revenue collectors.
Sunday, who was riding the motorbike, was stopped by the revenue collectors, demanding for the rider’s permit.
He was said to have told the revenue collectors that he was not using the motorcycle for commercial purposes, hence he does not need the receipt.
He equally explained that he needed to take his wife to the hospital for urgent check-up.
However, instead of the revenue collectors leaving Sunday, his bike was pushed by one of them and as a result the man and his heavily pregnant wife fell down.
The woman started bleeding profusely because she landed on her tummy.
Sympathizers around, who saw the woman crying and shouting for help, caught the revenue collector that pushed the bike while his colleague escaped.
The apprehended revenue collector was beating heavily by the enraged sympathizers.
All attempts to speak with the pregnant woman yielded no result as she was only screaming on top of her voice requesting that her life and that of her unborn child be saved.
An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Ade, said the officials of the state government had in the past caused series of accidents at that spot while trying to extort money or seize motorcycles from commercial bike operators so as to meet the targets given to them.
The woman was later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
