The Ogun House of Assembly has approved the extension of the tenure of the present 20 local government transition committee chairmen and members by another period of three-months.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun had written to the assembly requesting approval for the extension of the tenure of the chairmen and transition committee member managing the affairs of the 20 LG councils in the state.
The approval followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs by its Chairman, Akeem Balogun during plenary in Abeokuta.
Balogun , thereafter, moved the motion for the adoption of the report which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Ganiyu Oyedeji.
The motion was subsequently unanimously adopted by the whole house.
Olakunle Oluomo, the speaker, thereafter called on the governor to immediately constitute the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct election into the councils in line with the nation’s constitution.
Oluomo said that the inauguration of the electoral commission became imperative to allow for the conduct of democratic election at the expiration of the three months extension approved for the LG chairmen.
Also during plenary, the assembly invited the management of Dangote Industries Limited to appear before it over public complaints on alleged recklessness of its drivers, which had led to avoidable loss of lives in the state.
The speaker announced the invitation, while responding to the submissions of Abiodun Sylvester, who decried the recklessness of the drivers, which had led to loss of lives of some members of his constituency.
Meanwhile, Oluomo has urged residents of the state to continue to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 precautionary measures as some of the developed nations were now experiencing the second wave of the pandemic.
He noted that regular hand washing, observation of social distancing and other protocols must be observed.
The speaker said that the partial reopening of educational institutions, religious places and markets by government did not mean that transmission of COVID-19 was over.
He said that the nation’s economy could not afford a second wave of the pandemic, hence the need for the people to observe all the preventive measures.
