The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission has solicited for the support of the state’s police command as it prepares for the forthcoming local government election, scheduled to hold on the 24th of July 2021.
Babatunde Osibodu, the state chairman of the commission, made the appeal on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, in his office at Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The OGSIEC acknowledged the fact that police, being the lead agency in internal security, has a key role to play in the conduct of elections.
Osibodu noted that the commission cannot conduct any successful election without the support of the police because the protection of election materials as well as electoral officers is the sole responsibility of the police.
He, therefore, stressed that the success of the forthcoming local government election depends largely on the cooperation and support of officers and men of the command.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police assured the commission of the command’s resolve to ensure that the election is conducted under a very peaceful atmosphere, adding that the command would do everything possible, within the ambit of the law, to ensure free, fair and credible election.
