Offa community in Kwara State says it has constituted a 15-member technical committee saddled with the responsibility of curtailing the spread of the coronavirus in its domain.
The constitution of the committee was announced in a statement issued by Muideen Ibrahim, the National Secretary of Offa Descendants Union, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Omu-Aran on Thursday.
The committee headed by Prof. Waheed Olatinwo as Chairman also has Maruf Ajenifuja, ODU National Public Relations Officer, as its Secretary.
According to the statement, the team is saddled with the responsibility of curtailing the spread of the virus in Offa Local Government Area through adequate dissemination of information in partnership with the State Technical Committee on COVID-19.
It would be recalled that Kayode Alabi, Kwara State’s Deputy Governor, had ordered a 14-day total lockdown in Offa community from 6pm on Wednesday.
Alabi, who is also the Chairman of the State Technical Committee on COVID-19, had said the directive followed the death of the state’s index case, who hailed from the community.
The statement warned the public from posting any information on the COVID-19 in respect of the community without approval of the committee.
It said: “In the light of the foregoing, no one should post any information on COVID -19, most especially with respect to Offa without recourse or clearance from the technical team.
“Please abide and follow all the instructions of the state government and most importantly, stay safe
“Kindly note that this is in the overall interest of all of us.”
The committee also said it had chosen and approved Offa General Hospital as its designated isolation centre for COVID-19 contacts.
It said the choice of Offa General Hospital as holding facility was to provide relief to both the caregivers and suspected COVID-19 victims of logistic difficulties in accessing quality healthcare.
It said the General Hospital would continue to be opened to Accident, Emergency and Maternity Services only, while all other cases would be taken care of at the Cottage hospital in Ijagbo.
