Enugu North Local Government Area on Monday brightened their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the ongoing International Youth Week Football Championship by beating Ezeagu LGA 2-0.
Enugu North’s goals were courtesy of a brace by Ugochukwu Odoh in the 34th and 68th minutes.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Enugu North LGA had beaten Udi LGA 4-0 in their first match.
They are now with six points from two matches in their group.
In Monday’s other match, Nkanu West LGA overpowered Enugu South 2-0 with goals from Chinze Ugwu and Kingsley Nkama in the 47th and 79th minutes respectively.
Speaking after the matches, the Director of Local Organising, Enugu State Ministry of Youths and Sports, Boniface Onovo, said the tournament was organised to commemorate the international youth week.
Onovo said: “This football competition is being sponsored by a non-governmental organisation, World Youth Alliance, in partnership with the Enugu State Ministry of Youths and Sports.
“All the LGAs in the state are participating in the competition, and they were grouped into four with one group having five teams and the other groups with four each.
“Due to time limit, only a team which top their group will qualify straight for the semi-finals which will come up on Saturday.’’
Onovo said Enugu North, Nkanu West, Enugu South, Ezeagu and Udi LGAs have been placed in the group at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium centre.
He said: “The other groups are competing at the Rangers camp, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Stadium and Emene centre.
“The winner of Saturday’s matches will play in the final match on Monday, August 13.’’
Onovo disclosed that there are cash prizes for the winners as the first-placed team would win N500,000, the second-placed team N300,000 and the third-placed team N200,000.
He added that all the participating teams are entitled to N100,000 each as participation fee in the football competition.
