Teams Anambra and Kaduna State have dominated the Chess event of the ongoing the 3rd National Youth Games in Ilorin, Kwara with Kaduna winning three gold medals and one bronze.
Anambra on the other hand won one gold and three silver from the same event.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Team Anambra medals tally has increased to two gold, six silver and three bronze.
In Weightlifting, Kaosisochukwu Obika won one silver and two bronze in the -53 kg of the female category, behind Osun that swept the three available gold in the event.
Rivers were second in the event with two silver and one bronze.
Anambra girls had on Thursday ended their campaign in the Cricket event with a win in the third place game against Oyo State.
The girls won the game with a century runs and loss of four wickets, while Oyo scored 89 runs and eight wickets both for 15 overs and two innings.
Anambra had earlier won a gold and silver in Karate boys and 100m girls through Emmanuel Peter and Amarachukwu Egbochinam.
Also, team Kaduna has won six gold, five silver and five bronze medals at the Games.
Speaking on the performance of his team, the leader of the Kaduna State contingent, Mukhtar Mohammed, said it had been a very impressive run for his team.
Mohammed, who is the Special Adviser to Daniel Danauta, Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Culture in the state, said they were determined to make the top three at the end of the Games.
He attributed the success of his team to the commitment of the state government and the sports associations in the state which, he described as active.
Mohammed said: “From the beginning of the year, we knew these Games will come up and we started planning.
“We gave the various associations target and they started working, we knew we were coming to compete with the best from across the country, so it is not surprising that we are doing well.
“Apart from our target of emerging in the first three, we hope that our athletes will make the national camp in good number.’’
