The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Niger State Wing has on Monday disclosed that between 2015 and 2017, the Union recorded over 2,000 deaths and various transfers.
While making this disclosure, the the state Chairman, NUT, Comrade Ibrahim Umar, directed all teachers in the state to join in the nationwide strike for increment of wages by organised labour.
Umar while addressing journalists at the end of the State Wing Executive Council meeting at the NUT Teachers House in Minna, said out of the less than 27,000 teachers in the state, 970 were transferred to various locations.
According to Umar: “We have our records.
“Between 2015 and 2017, the Union recorded 2,000 deaths and 970 teachers transferred to various locations, making us less that 27,000.
“Out of our number, only 21,000 subscribed and benefited from our Endwell Scheme.”
In its demand, the Union called on the Niger State Government to regularise the release and implementation of members’ promotion at both primary and post primary school levels between 2015 and 2017.
Speaking on the proposed strike, Umar said: We received a directive from the national body that by 12 midnight of Monday if nothing happens in the affirmative, we should join in the national strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress.”
The State chairman also stated that the number of teachers in the state has reduced from 30,000 to less than 27,000, saying: “We want Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to send an executive bill to the state House of Assembly for the express approval to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years and 35 to 40 years of service.”
