The Federal Road Safety Commission on Thursday said the number of vehicular accidents on the Ogere area of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway dropped to 90 in 2013 as against 136 in 2012.
The Ogere Unit Commander of FRSC, Godwin Sangbaza, disclosed this at the “Ember Months Campaign”, organised for commercial drivers at the Ilishan-Remo Motor Park.
Sangbaza added that the number of people involved in the crashes was 818 in 2013 as against 1,105 in 2012.
According to him, 397 persons were injured in 2013 as against 688 in 2012, while 60 people were killed in 2013 as against 91 in 2012.
He said 361 persons were rescued in 2013 while 326 persons were rescued in 2012.
“From the analysis, you can see that there has been a tremendous achievement in road traffic crashes reduction in 2013 and we hope to reduce it even more in 2014,” the FRSC boss said.
Sangbaza attributed the reduction to massive clearance of trucks and trailers often parked indiscriminately on both sides of the road.
He said the feat was achievable through dialogue and public education of the drivers, owners and other stakeholders.
He added: “All the trailers and tankers that used to park indiscriminately on the road were moved to their parks.
“They have all gone to their parks, so that motorists can move freely on the highway.
“We also make sure our men are always at the black spots, the crash areas to flag down overspeeding vehicles.”
The Ember Months Campaign also featured health screening/test for drivers at the park.
The unit commander also said the health status of drivers, bad roads and bad vehicles contributed to accidents on the roads, hence the need for health talk and screening.
Rasheed Olanrewaju, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers in the park, urged his members to always do what is right and stop overspeeding.
Remilekun Sopitan, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency Commander of Ogere FRSC Unit, suggested that disciplinary committees be set up for road traffic unions to curb their excesses.
