National Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE) in Abia says it will not call off the strike by its Aba North Local Government Council members until government grants its request.
It is demanding that Abia’s Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s punishes the council chairman, Mr David Ikonne, over his alleged battering of an employee, Chidimma Nwanosike.
The union shut the council secretariat on Oct. 6 to drive its demand home.
Ikechi Nwigwe, the chapter’s president told the News Agency of Nigeria in Aba on Monday that the union would have called off the strike, but for a new development.
The new development, he explained, was the transfer of the alleged victim of the battery out of the Aba North council.
He said that the Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Chinedu Orji, had set up a committee to look into the matter and the workers’ demand.
Nwigwe said the committee was expected to make its findings known on Tuesday to enable the union and the house to take a final decision.
“We had an understanding with the House to open the gate of the secretariat because the complex houses other civil servants who are not members of the local government system.
“Then on Friday we got information that the woman was on transfer. We would have suspended the strike but we had to sustain it until we discuss with the speaker on Tuesday.
“The discussion will determine if we will call out other NULGE members in Abia to join the strike or call it off,’’ Nwaigwe said.
