NUJ pickets Nigerian Compass over unpaid pension, cooperative funds, taxes and salaries

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has commenced the picketing of the Nigerian Compass over the non-payment of the pension and taxes of staff since it commenced operations in 2008.
The NUJ also embarked on the action to force the company to pay the entitlements of staff that it sacked and those who have resigned since the establishment of the company.
The company has also not paid workers in its employ since July last year.

The NUJ was led on the picketing, which is still ongoing as at press time, by its National President,  Comrade Garba Muhammed.
Garba, according to a source at the office of the newspaper outfit located at Isheri, off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, is on the mission with the executive members of the NUJ in Lagos and Ogun States.
When Muhammed and his team arrived, they were initially not allowed in by the securitymen on duty based on the orders of the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the company, Sina Kawonise.
However, the NUJ team persevered and was finally able to gain access to the company.
Kawonise and the management of the company had been playing hide and seek with the leadership of the NUJ since last year on the issues raised by the NUJ.
The management of the company had failed to keep its promise to rectify the shortcomings pointed out by the leadership of the NUJ.
It has failed to keep its promise to pay up more than 10 times.
About 120 ex-workers of the company also joined in the picketing exercise to press home their demands for the payment of their outstanding salaries, pension fund, contributions to the Cooperative Society, taxes and final entitlements..
The pension fund is put at over N120 million while the tax is in the region of N40 million.
There is also eight months salary being owed the workers.
There is also close to N8 million Cooperative Society fund deducted from salaries of staff members but not remitted to the association.
More reports on the picketing coming as Muhammed was still addressing the team that went with him as at the time of going to press.
The Company is owned by a former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
