The National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abdulwaheed Odusile, has called on Bauchi state government to implement weigh-in allowance for journalists working with state-owned media organizations.
Making the call in Bauchi on Thursday at the opening ceremony of a meeting of the NUJ Central Working Committee, he observed that Bauchi was the only state in the North-East zone that had not started implementing it.
According to him, journalists work almost 24 hours as they have no ‘closing time’, as such should be compensated.
Odusile however commended the effort of the state government in establishing Mass Communication department with state-of- the-earth equipment at the state-owned Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi.
The president said that the department would train professionals that would disseminate quality information to the public.
In his speech, Governor Mohammed Abdullahi, ,represented by the State Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Liman Bello, said that the state government would soon digitize the Bauchi State Television to conform with global trend in the profession.
He urged journalists to complement effort of government in the sustenance of democracy in the state and country at large.
Also speaking, the patron of NUJ, Bauchi council, who is also the Emir of Dass, Alhaji Othman Bilyaminu, called on journalists to help in enlightening the public on the dangers of violence.
He said the responsibilities of journalists had no limitation and therefore should champion ways of addressing challenges in the country.
Also in her remarks, the North East Vice President of the NUJ, Aishatu Ibrahim, said there were plans to organize peace summit for stakeholders in the sub-region to curb insecurity.
Ibrahim said: “The peace summit will be in partnership with Adamawa state government and it intends to map out a blue print on security issues.”
